Orlando Acosta Announces Sierra Club Endorsement in St. Petersburg Council Race

Calls on Ed Montanari to Answer for His Right-Wing Anti-Environment Record

St Petersburg, FL – Orlando Acosta has been endorsed by the Suncoast Sierra Club, the local arm of the nation’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Acosta faces Ed Montanari in the November General Election. Montanari is the only right-wing voice on the St. Petersburg council and has consistently voted against measures to reduce pollution, prepare the city for climate change, and invest in renewable energy.

“I’m honored to accept the endorsement of the Sierra Club and I thank them for all their work to address climate change and to promote environmental stewardship,” Acosta said. “We need leaders who understand the serious threats posed by our rising waters and are willing to invest in our infrastructure to protect our homes.”

"We are very pleased to endorse Orlando Acosta, a veteran with a progressive agenda focused on environmental policy, social justice, housing affordability, and public safety,” said Dan Huber, Sierra Club spokesperson. "Acosta views climate change and sea level rise as core issues facing St. Petersburg, and strives to make environmentalism part of the city’s ‘political DNA’.”

“I’m calling on Ed Montanari to explain why he would vote against our environment,” Acosta added. “Voters deserve to know why Ed is siding with Donald Trump and Rick Scott on this issue instead of working to address climate change – St. Petersburg can’t afford to have a climate denier on council.”

-In 2007, Montanari opposed calls for St. Petersburg to sign on to the US Mayors Climate Agreement.

-In 2016, Montanari was the only vote against funding to prepare for sea-level rise and storm surges.
